2009 Stuff the Bus

Communities in Schools of Leon County recently hosted its 4th annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive for local at-risk students on January 28, 2009. Tallahassee downtown businesses and residents brought donations of school supplies to stuff a yellow school bus parked in front of the Doubletree Hotel at the corner of Adams Street and Park Avenue.

Superintendent Jackie Pons drove the campaign while many city, county and state leaders also brought donations. State Representative Michelle Vasalinda, County Commissioners Akin Akinyemi and Bryan Desloge, along with school board members Deedee Rasmussen and Maggie Lewis Butler, braved the rain to help stuff the bus.

The Doubletree Hotel provided the parking spaces for the bus and served free coffee to donors. "We are proud to do our part in helping our kids succeed in school, and are grateful to our downtown neighbors for coming out and donating," said Kristi Griffith, director of sales and marketing for the Doubletree Hotel. Donations are accepted year-round however, the downtown event held in January helped replenish the school supplies kids need for the last part of the school year.

"Many people give at the beginning of the school year, but those supplies quickly run out. The items we collected today will ensure that kids have all the tools they need to success in the classroom until the end of the year," said Debbie Bergstrom Breeze, executive director of Communities In Schools of Leon County.
