Our Programs

Students CookingThe 21st Century Community Learning Centers - After School Programs
The 21st Century Community Learning Center program is a key component of President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act. It is an opportunity for students and their families to continue to learn new skills and discover new abilities after the school day has ended. The focus of this program is to provide expanded academic and enrichment opportunities for children attending low performing schools. In partnership with Leon County Schools and others, CIS Leon provides services to the after-school programs at 11 Leon County Schools: Apalachee, Astoria Park, Gretchen Everhart, Hartsfield, Oak Ridge, Pineview, Ruediger, Sabal Palm, and Woodville Elementary Schools; Fairview Middle School; and Rickards High School.

CIS of Leon County provides Academic Enhancement Programs, Cultural Enhancement Programs, and Supplemental Program Services to these schools.  Academic Enhancement Programs are curriculum-based classes based on the Sunshine State Standards; students broaden their knowledge by participating in courses such as cooking, photography, character development, and marine science.  Some of the Cultural Enhancement Programs provided by CIS of Leon last year included: Be Seen on Halloween (Halloween safety goody bags); FCAT Goody Bags (incentive treats for the FCAT); and Summer Fun Books (free books for summer fun reading).  Students also benefit from our Supplemental Program Services which range from a Birthday Book Club to Stuff the Bus school supply drive to a school library make-over.

Dollars For Scholars® is a volunteer-operated, community-based scholarship foundation legally affiliated with Scholarship America and operated by CIS. Its purpose is to expand access to education opportunities through scholarships and academic support, to encourage educational achievement by raising and distributing scholarship aid, and to encourage and support students pursuing all types of post secondary education. The CIS Leon Dollars For Scholars scholarship is designed exclusively for students with disabilities. Click here for the Dollars For Scholars Application.

Our Projects

Stuff the Bus

Volunteers at Stuff the Bus 2007Every spring, CIS Leon stuffs a school bus full of school supplies donated by the community.  Held at the two Super Wal-mart  locations in Tallahassee, Stuff the Bus is one of our favorite projects.  The donated school supplies are distributed to Leon County schools with after-school programs.  This year, Stuff the Bus will be held in January 2008.

FCAT Goody Bags
Goody Bags!In 2007, CIS Leon provided approximately 1000 goody bags to students in Leon County to encourage them to do well on the  FCAT and to reward them for their hard work during the school year.  Goody bags include exciting incentives such as pencils, stickers, bookmarks, notepads, and small toys.  This small, but special treat makes a difference in the lives of the children in Leon County who work so hard to succeed on the FCAT.

Summer Fun BooksSummer Fun Books
Understanding that many students do not have books of their own at home, CIS Leon created the Summer Fun Books project to provide over 1,000 students with a book to take home for fun summer reading.

Birthday Book Club
Happy Birthday!  On their birthday, students in the Birthday Book Club get to choose a book of their own to take home.  Books for the Birthday Book Club are donated by the community.  This year, the Birthday Book Club benefits students in the after-school programs at the following Leon County Schools: Bond ElementarySchool; Fairview Middle School; Rickards High School; and Gretchen Everhart School.  If you would like to donate books to the Birthday Book Club, contact CIS Leon today!

"The birthday rule in our house is this: have a small party of four or five friends and receive personal gifts, or have a large party and collect items for a charitable cause.  My sons really enjoyed helping other children through the Birthday Book Club.  We asked each guest to bring a favorite book or one that reflected their interests.  We got a great variety and so many books - and the kids were so proud of their collective effort.  It was a great way to put the focus back on fun and giving!  We still talk about where those books might be now!"  -- Lisa Carey, mother of Mac (11) and John (8), who donated books to the Birthday Book Club

Congratulations to Bill Krizner, who won the Take A Chance For Kids drawing in August! The drawing, sponsored by Pro Steel Builders, Sawgrass Marriott Resort, and Janet Gay Marketing, raised over $3,200 for Communities In Schools of Leon County.  Thank you to all CIS Leon supporters who took a chance to make the lives of Leon County's students better.

Dine Out For Kids
Our First Annual Dine Out For Kids event was a huge success thanks to presenting sponsor Envision Credit Union, the six wonderful restaurants who donated a portion of their proceeds to CIS, and all the CIS supporters who dined out for kids.
